Sure, to the extent possible. Howard usually does a better job than I do, however.

At this point I can only intelligently discuss the finer points of different types of beef jerky available at gas station food marts, and how much one little bit of I-80 looks a lot like any other little bit of I-80. I did make good enough time to make the Lockheed Credit union block my Visa card - from Little America, WY to Sidney, NE at an average of 81 mph looks suspiciously like someone stole my card number so they blocked it. So I had to call and reassure them that yes, it really is me.

Ah, the interstate system. Now we've all seen a bit of the same thing - over many hours - at different times of course. I will say though that you get a lot more "air time" in eastern Minnesota on I-90 in a Miata. They should give frequent flyer miles for the wash-board there. 'sorry, couldn't resist. Now, back to the NATS.

I have been pretty impressed with the road quality between San Jose and here (York, NE). By far the worst was in California through the Sierras, but even that seems better than it has been. Chains are pretty rough on pavement. Everywhere else everything has been pretty good so far, and some of the usual bad spots (like various points between Cheyenne and about North Platte where it seems to have been the original pavement from the 50's) was just fine and notably better than the last few years. And for whatever reason, there are far fewer places where it's under repair than is typical for this time of year.

The air going through the Sierras was horrible, all those fires just about blotted out the Sun.

p.s. I am also currently traversing the longest single straight-line stretch in the entire interstate highway system - 70-something miles between Grand Island and Lincoln are straight as a string.

Hey Brett If you are staying at the York exit, the town is 8 or 9 miles off the freeway. There is a great restaurant there run by a bunch of lady's in gingham dresses. The food is homemade and wonderful. I made it a point to stay overnight at the York exit on my second trip back east in 2003. Best of luck.............

Passing through the Wyoming Nebraska area I am sure you have spotted an occasional fenced off patches of nothing out in the middle of ranchers fields. Those would be Minuteman III silos or perhaps now Peace keepers. There are hundreds of them birds in that part of the country

Sorry Howard, but if you ask at the motels at the York exit, namely the Super 8, I think they could tell you. I just don't remember. Heck, I don't remember much about yesterday either!!!

It's gotta be "Chances R", and I agree about the food!

If you ever stop in/near Des Moines, there's am excellent restaurant about 5 miles North in Johnston, called "Trostel's Greenbrier Restaurant". They offer many wild game dishes, and superb steaks and a nice wine list, too.

Also, I recommend the Strategic Air and Space Museum between Omaha and Lincoln.

So true !! It's a lot bigger and better than its outdoor predecessor at Offutt AFB. Closer to I-80, too.

Also the somewhat smaller Armoured Fighting Vehicle Museumin Heartland.

Don't miss Buffalo Bill's ranch in Nebraska. Real live bison.

Brett,

Be advised Shareen shed a few tears at the Little America reference. She says she won't miss the tabulation but she loved our road trip caravans together.

I sorta do to but my knee that binds up after five minutes of sitting wouldn't really enjoy 12 plus hours a day of doing so. Started PT on Wednesday and they didn't break anything ... which seems good.

So do I! It was a little quicker, but a lot more boring. I made it just fine, rolled in at about 6:45.

Just in case you've wondered, as I have, if you run a hybrid car out of gas, would the battery get you to the next town, it won't. It's just like running out of gas in a real car, except the guy who comes from town to bring you the gas thinks it's funnier.

So, in amongst the gallons of PowerMaster, carry one gallon of gasoline....that should get you around 70 more miles.....

Howard, or better yet, try what Arlie Prezzler tried one day after a WAM contest. He ran out of gas in his little Mazda truck, and poured in a gallon of model fuel.

He said it didn't run very well, but it got him to a gas station.

Soon the cost of gasoline may be comparable to model airplane fuel! Sheesh.
