Feds bust model airplane terror plot

Check out Fox News for the story. I don't think this is going to help out with FAA regulations.

It appears this guy (aledged terrorist)was planning to blow up the Pentagon and the Capitol building using RADIO CONTROLLED AIRPLANES. Very little else has been released on this, but at least, he wasn't planning to use CONTROL LINE AIRCRAFT to deliver the goods. Fox News says the guy is a Northeastern University graduate with a degree in physics. Doesn't seem too bright to get fooled by the FBI. Maybe he should have gone to MIT or Purdue? [photo not recovered: sipcof.gif] Steve

Big problem here is that our 'enforcement officials' don't know the difference between R/C and Control Line aircraft.

A young man of arabic descent and of the Religion of Peace? How surprising and unexpected. Because I thought the biggest threat to America came from grandmothers in wheelchairs and 4 year olds

Thankfully, DOJ lawyers are rushing to the scene to make sure his civil rights are not violated.

They showed the planes on TV last night, they looked like ducted fan models. I guess the wanna be pilot had money, those models are not cheap. Wonder where he planned on taking them off and where he planned on standing to fly them, not an easy task to accomplish in that rather crowded area.
I think our immigration policies are insane, then again, those oil rich countries have enough money to pay full freight at the universities
The Washinhton Post described the bomber as a "model airplane enthusiast", no mention of any terrorist ties. Imagine if the guy went to Liberty University, Jerry Fahlwell's school.

I heard the Reuters news and according to it, he didn't have the money to purchase the models. Makes me wonder if he even knew how to fly them. Five pounds of "C4" seems a tad heavy for even those models and would not do that much damage. He wanted to hit the capital dome and "smash it to smithereens", His words not mine. Wonder how much this stunt cost the Liberal machine?

This is at least the 3rd attempt in recent times to sway the public.

5lb payload for a .60 with the right pilot is doable.

I heard the plan was to get people in the buildings to run outside where he wanted to pick them off with a rifle. Guess he didn't have the money for that, either Looks like they got another terrorist, the American from New Mexico, Anwar Alalaki, or something like that. He spoke for awhile at a nearby mosque in Fall Church, Va. The FBI arrested a group of "worshippers" in the parking lot at that mosque, the trunk of their car was filled with weapons, automatic weapons and such. I don't think they were going deer hunting. The loon that shot up our soldiers at FT. Hood was a disciple of Alalaki. Good riddance.

Snide remarks aside....this is serious stuff!
I wager our AMA spends 30% of their "huddle" time on jets, another 30% on "over the horizon" r/c issues and another on giant scale issues...

MODEL AIRPLANE means just that to law enforcement, the DoD, and especially to our Congressional folks...and all will shut down all (legal) model flying activity in a heartbeat if they feel that it will protect America.....they imagine ALL model aircraft to be RPV's, just loitering and waiting for a proper target.

In conversations with Dave Mathewson, I know that he and the AMA lobbyists make it clear to officials that control line is unlike free flight and r/c....

Occasions like this make me glad that we have the AMA......

I certainly hope so, clearly he has been racially profiled and everybody knows that the Muslim community has been targeted for discrimination for no good reason. Like those whiny 9/11 family's, always on about their hardship. Someone might still be complaining about a Mosque/dance club on Ground Zero somewhere, need to stamp that out. Free speech has it limits.

The government will require a licence (new revenew source) for anyone wanting to fly...then a 3 day waiting period for new plane purchases. Models will be limited in size and so will power sources. Electric will be banned since they are too quiet and besides everyone knows li-polys are bombs anyhow. More over reaction plain and simple. Many suffer from the deeds of a moron.

All those sound good to me, particularly the three-day waiting period for buying an ARF. Potential buyers would be required to see a video of Chinese sweatshops and be read a lecture by a modeler on how buying an ARF destroys potential life skills.

I saw two potential candidates - do your mean the "how to rig up a bomb drop" article? There have been more than a few of those in the modeling press over the past 75 years or so.

Just got an e-mail from Tower Hobbies. The DOT wants to classify mocel rocket fuel as "explosive" and the price of shipping will go higher that the rockets themselves. This will kill model rocketing for kids.
They also want to control our model airplanes and put user fees on our real ones. Just like in Europe where general aviation is dead.

Insanity, it just keeps getting deeper!!

Power and control
The money no longer matters for those who want the power and control other than 'breaking' the citizen so he is easier to control and have power over.

Solution is to stop voting for Liberal Democrats and Liberal Republicans.

Clearly not a very knowledgeable modeler. Why bother with a dedicated power train and the weight of same? Just assemble a big-a*s ARF of some sort, powering it with a healthy electric motor, this fed by the largest possible lipo battery pack.

No excess payload capacity for C4 and such--just let the battery do the damage!*

If there are some flaws in this proposal we can probably get Model Aviation staff to do some research, possibly adding to the bomb-drop article mentioned upstream a bit. (Are they stoopid or what?! Never mind...)

*Yeah, I know that Mr. Hunt and others have rather pointedly said currently popular batteries don't actually "blow up," that they just burn really fast or somesuch. Seems to me as being a distinction without a difference. Gasoline in our car engines doesn't "blow up" either, but put your ears to headers on a 454 rat motor, even at idle, and tell me it doesn't sound like an explosion!
