detroiter stunter

ive just got my plans but they are for the d tube type wing not the original. should i try to build it like a ares wing or would that make it not classic legal or is the d tube a better wing

The "Strathmore" (spelling?) or "Detroit Stunter" would be a legit Classic with either I-beam (because that's the way they were built), or C-tube (because that's the way they were published). A foam wing would also be legal, tho I would expect a possible hit on the appearance points if all sheeted; also if built up with Warren Truss ribs. But all would be "legal", because there is no rule in Classic that allows disqualifying a model for modifications.

Personally, I think the I-beamers look good, but are very inferior in bending and torsional strength. The choice depends on what you value most, looks or function. Steve

PAMPA sells the plans as the "Saturn" /"Mystery Detroiter",which Fred Carnes drew up in 1997 or 1998. Those plans show the I-beam wing of the original that I built in 1957.I built three planes with I-beam wings and never had a structural problem with that construction. End result was a lighter wing than most.

Be sure to post pictures when you finish your plane. I'd sure like to see it.

I recall that an old MODEL AIRPLANE NEWS mag, around 1958/59 had the article of the Detroit Stunter by Rolland McDonald. In the article he mentioned that, while the original(s) were built with the I-beam construction, the drawing and plans were modified for an D-tube (or perhaps a C-tube) construction because he felt that most people were more familiar with this type of structure.
If you are curious, I would try to find that magazine and maybe send you a scan of the article and plan.

i have the plans and the article that were by Rolland McDonald and i think i might build the d tube wing because of the strength ill need for grass landings . ill post pics as soon as i can.i think i might try to finish the plane with the paint scheme Rolland used i might need help from Bob McDonald to get it right and the canopy

The plans for Rolland's "Challenger" , which is the trigear version of the Detroiter have the original I-beam wing plans.
