On the thread below concerning "pukey profiles"...

the two engines that were referred to were the OS Max .20/.25FP.

Seeing as how these are no longer available, new, unless you happen across one at a swap meet or some other such situation, what would a suitable replacement be? My best guess would be the Thunder Tiger series, followed by the Magnum series. Is this it, or are there more?

Before you answer, yes, I already know about the .25LA. I'm more interested in getting the .20FP or .25FP clone instead of the LA (timing, power, & quality issues, mostly).

I did some checking over on Leonard's main site and found the answer I was looking for, at least for the .25FP (Thunder Tiger .25).

Still interested in a clone of the .20FP, though.

I think Magnum(chinese) is still using true ABC for their P/L's. If so, that would be your best bet.

Not sure why you question LA quality. I recently checked 6 LA 40's. The deck height and head buttons were within .001 in. They can evidently build them to tighter tolerances than the average home shop guy can easily measure.

The quality thing is aimed more at the backplate. I have a .46LA that I am quite pleased with, and just got a .15LA-S that I need to get a new backplate for before the original has a chance to get broken.

What I like about the .46LA is that the spraybar mount is seperate from the backplate, whereas on the .15LA, and I guess on the .25LA, it's molded into the backplate. If it breaks off, you have to replace the entire backplate, unless you cut a score mark into it so if it breaks, it breaks where you want it.

I see two or three of these type engines every time I get on ebay. Set your price and watch them. I went on the RC side of Ebay today and I was supprised at the control line engines listed there. Some of these engines did not come up in a general search of the site listing. They seem to go at a cheep price.
If you are interested in an fp go get it.

I have a couple of Magnum 40's. One has a chrome liner, the other has a nickel liner. You can tell them apart, I'm told, because the nickel liner is plated all over, inside and out.

While I am not saying the 20FP is the *only* choice for a Cool Thing Profile, to my knowledge this is in fact the case. To the point where I am backing off on the 25FP.

I think there are only two options when it comes to locating a good 20FP: 1) Buy one known to be in good condition, convert it to CL setup; 2) Buy what is obviously a junker but is at least a complete engine, convert, install new piston/cylinder set and handle appropriately.

With a piston/cylinder set being about $25.00, N.2 might well be your best bet.

An edit because it slipped my mind that you will find 25FPs to be more commonly available. So it might be best to look for a clapped-out 25 you can get for nearly free, rebuilding it into a 20 with new head, gasket set and piston/cylinder.

Uh, I have never done this, but at least two people who should know tell me 25s can be made into 20s. And the other way 'round, of course.

Does anybody know for sure?

Well I hate to say this but Dan is correct the FP 20 is an outstanding little engine as well as the FP 25 & LA 25. But with all that said, the other engine that is just as good an often overlooked is the old Veco 19 BB which is still available from MECOA and proudly made in the USA. With a 9 X 4 they are Awesome!!!

eBay revised their listing categories. One of the sub-categories is - "Radio Control and Control Line", which is why it's coming up.
Just remember that not everyone knows how to spell or knows what they have. Using alternative keywords will sometimes get you a deal simply because it won't come up in a specific search.

The Enya 20 is better than the fp anyday. Don Mclave has new one. The only problem with it is you have to break it in.

And the Enya 20S is currently in production! It can be bought direct from Enya via the Enya website, or from Randy at Aeroproducts. Who knows, there may even be a hobby shop somewhere that carries Enyas.
