I just completed a test of a product called Evapo-Rust. I've heard about it for years, even before it had a name. I think it may have come from Alabama, as that was where I first heard of it, from a friend down there. It's a rust remover, so if any of you have ever needed a rust remover, here's a product you may like. These are my test results. All parts are from small, old model airplane engines from the 40s and 50s.
I received the gallon of Evapo-Rust yesterday, and tested a number of steel parts varying from lightly rusted to very severely rusted. There were washers, bolts, nuts, a piston and a crankshaft. Some of the washers and nuts were very severely rusted. I put them into a shallow butter bowl, poured in the solution, covering them, and just laid the lid on the top, not sealed. I looked at the parts a couple of times yesterday, just to see what was happening. Didn't look too impressive after a couple of hours, and then, somehow, I just forgot about them until this afternoon (20 hours later). MAN! I've never seen anything like it! No procedure I've ever tried did what this stuff did. The light to moderately rusted stuff came out looking like new; discolored, of course, but rust free. It definitely removed the black oxide coating, but the cad plating isn't affected, I don't think. Some of the drive washers are so eaten away that they may not be usable, but the rust was THAT bad; the solution didn't eat the good metal. The crankshaft is perfect. A few of the severely rusted parts I brushed lightly with a small stainless steel brush and put back in the soultion until tomorrow. Just figured a little brushing couldn't hurt. These last parts were REALLY badly rusted, but most will be very usable when finished. I think the piston will be usable once the rust is off the crown. And, I fished all the parts out of the solution with my bare hands! No burning or anything. I rinsed them off, and now they're drying in a little toaster oven. When dry, I'll put them in a 1 lb coffee can full of ATF fluid to soak a few days and then I'll put them back with their engines. The engines all need cleaning, but that's another process. Anyway, I really love this stuff. Now I've gotta search out more rusty stuff to work on. It's a pleasure to work with.
