Time for an "index"?

Perhaps it's time someone came up with an index of interesting threads which contain good information. For instance, it suddenly occurred to me, today, to find that thread about getting a good finish using spray cans (using the "mist" technique). But looking for it, or even for the more recent thread that referred to it, would be a major pain in the neck.

So I propose a web page that links threads to subjects, such as "paint", "4 strokes", etc. People would propose additions to the page via email.

The other day, I was thinking that some of these threads could be assembled into "articles" on various subject. It would be a bit of work. Leonard probably wouldn't have time, but maybe could deputize somebody. It could prevent repeating a lot of the same subjects over & over, but then there wouldn't be much going on. Also, personal bias could determine what is good info and what is not, sort of like the "Bad Boy" vs. "Good Girl" Stunt columns in SN. Steve

That might be good in the long term, but an index of links would be of immediate use, and much easier to compile. The index need not even be on this web site. Anyone with a web server could put one up. I'd do it, if I had my web server up again.

Why not just save the interesting ones to your hard disk. When you get a lot, just build you own index page or add them to your bookmarks.

Two reasons come to mind.

1. This will only benefit you (the person who is building the index), not everyone else.

2. A shared index will help head off the posting of repetitious questions. People can go look there first rather than asking the same question that had been answered (and beaten to death) 6 weeks ago. Usenet newsgroups have "FAQs" just for this reason.

Headings were my question. We have a subject line already, but it doesn't always list the subject (Like the one on "hold the tomatoes") and many (most) of the topics drift off subject anyway. And "Spray can" and "spray paint" and which paint, and spray techniques (applying first to spray guns, then spray cans) and a lot of other things intertwine. So someone would have to assign every thread into its proper location and pretty soon we are back to the search function. (If somneone in one response mentions hot wheels cars, do we list the entire thread under "hot wheels"?) We need some rules.

Otherwise, It could be done on this website. We just need rules and a methodology.

I wasn't suggesting keeping track of every thread - just noteworthy ones. The ones people might want to refer to for information.

Could you have category buttons on the "Compose your message" page such as engine, finish, trim, saftey, kits, tools, etc;
It would then be up to the individual that starts the post to classify the content.

And this wasn't quite what I had in mind, either. I didn't mean a mechanical indexing of the threads based on keywords, I meant a catalog of noteworthy threads compiled by someone or a group of people.

We could probably do that. Problem is people don't stick to the subject. Sometimes the best topics appear in the middle of a thread that began on an entirely different subject.

But it could help even the search function if we used some commonly accepted key words in our topic lists.
