model selecton for OS .46 LA

I know this is a very general question but I'd like to get some ideas as to my next building project. I'm trying to find a full bodied stunter for a OS .46 LA that I have. I'm not really a competitive flyer but I do want a plane capable of excellent performance. It seems most modern designs call for larger engines..many people going with the four-strokes. I would like a kit as my ability to build from plans is questionable!

The Ultra Hobby Products "Buccaneer 740" comes immediately to mind. Something from 570 to 620 sq. inches would be my choice, and keep the weight around 45 oz or so if you can. Lines about 64' should be a good place to start. Lose the stock muffler and use a SSW tongue muffler, a Mac's #6650, or a Big Art or RO-Jett tube muffler. RSM and Brodak both have some kits that would work, as do Walter Umland and Larry Richards. The Richards/Veco Hurricane, an Umland-Van Loo Chipmunk, or an RSM Pat Johnston P-40 or Mackey Crusader would be sweet. Steve

Jim's original used a 40 but he always felt it needed more so this kit calls for that and above
and the best is it IS still Classic Legal (if you want to compete)

My brother Jeff just got one of your Chipmunk kits..it is a great looking model for sure. Right now it would be a bit of a duplication but I highly reccommend it to anyone! NICE JOB.

You probably couldn't go wrong with either the Buccaneer or Chipmunk depending on what style you are after. I have a Buccaneer 740 with an LA 46 and all I can say is awesome. It is like they were designed for each other and the UHP kits are some of the best available.

Also, you can just buy the plans and a laser cut rib kit for scratch building.

I'm going to put one into my Continental when I get the opportunity to build it. I can actually use my Gypsy Ribs to build it with too. both airfoils and tapers are so close to identical I can't tell them apart!

I've never seen the Legacy 40 kit that you mentioned. How to I find it...I like the looks of the legacy alot but it is too big...the 40 sounds interesting.

Legacy 40 is a 575 sq in airplane. Do a forum search and you'll find more info on it here at SSW.

For someone wanting a model that is classic legal, can be competitive through advanced, attractive and reasonably easy to build the Skylark II(.46 size-56" span) seems made for the LA 46.

Flying classic and PA stunt with the same airplane, same pattern, etc. makes for a more complete contest for me-shame to drive a long way to enter one event and usually the two events can be flown without a schedule clash-frequently they are flown on different days even.

I have built 2 Orientals that also fly nice withe OS LA .46. My 2nd Oriental won my 1st-1st PA place in a stunt event. Detroit Int. Brodak plan.
A couple of designs not mentioned but they are profiles are Cardinal profile & the Pathfinder profile. Easy to build & great flyers. I still have both hanging in my shop. My Cardinal got me my first stunt plack. 2nd in PA Int. Cleveland, OH. Great times.
The OS LA .46s are great engines. They start 1st flip. They will run 4-2-4 or no break & will haul around heavy over wieght planes with almost no problem.
