And Mr. Alan Hahn brought up an option
of using Radial Engine Mounts as sold by website company
Texas Timers, http://www.texastimers.com/.
The webpage has this information on the mounts,
A lightweight mount that replaces the threaded engine back cover and allows a radial mount directly to the firewall. It provides for easy adjustment of thrust line and reduces the total flying weight of a model.  The mount has 12 pre-drilled holes for convenient installation.  We have three versions of this mount. One is for the popular AME/Norvel .049/. 061 engines (including the Big Mig models), another for the new VA MK II, and one for the Cox TD and Medallion .049/.051.

I was curious so I purchased a mount for my Norvel, Big Mig .049.
Delivery was quick (4 days).
I removed the Norvel back cover plate and installed the new mount.
Excellent fit too. Since a o-ring was not supplied with the Texas Timer
mount, I simply removed the o-ring off the Norvel plate and placed
the 0-ring on the new mount. And that's it!

One thing I noticed is if using this type of motor mount and the Norvel
engine, was the fact that the engine sits more closely to the airplane's
firewall and the Norvel muffler will not clear the firewall with out some minor
wood removal. If you use a nylon motor mount, the muffler clearance is a non-issue.

The Norvel Engine had it's original
head and plug swapped out for a Nelson head and
Nelson plug. As supplied from Doug Galbreath http://www.the-printer.net/DookCat.html

Thanks for posting Jaco. That info is really helpful. I am planning on getting a Norvel for stunt use. Which one is the best one to get? I was thinking either 049 or 061 size...
Big Mig? Startup? Or???

Hi Nick,

My knowledge of these smaller Norvewl engines comes from
reading this forum and looking at other websites. My experience
at running Norvel engines, is based on many suggestions or ideas
from all these websites too.

The Norvel BigMig and Start-up are the same engines except Start-up has a
gas tank included and the other does not.

As for a .049 or .061? I think it's up to what you want to fly. kinda like
just picking the right engine for the right plane. Some guys use a BigMig .049
for a Brodak Pathfinder (1/2a) size or other guys use a .061 for the same plane.
Some guys use a .074!
If you are entering contests, you will have to see what engine size is allowed for that contest.

Personally, I like all three Norvels, the .049-.061-.074.
Well made engines and parts are reasonable to acquire.
I am a sport flyer and cannot provide detailed information like the
engine guru's.
My best advice is to follow the break-in instructions, exactly!!!!
Start off with three head gaskets to break-in the engine.
AND check out this website.
A really good website that has important Norvel advice is:
http://www.aeromaniacs.com/
Heman, the guy who runs the site is friendly and most likely
be willing to answer other Norvel questions too.
He shows up here (SSW) alot.

The AME Norvels are a tad different where they run their best
using bladder pressure for the fuel system, I have not tried these
out yet as they are more of a HOT engine, something to look
forward to.

Take care,
