Enya 19 bolt size

What size bolts(screws?) hold on the front end of the Enya 19-V model 4005?

Hold on here. I think they're metric. 4-40s are just close enough to **** them up. There are screw sets available from Altec or perhaps you LHS. Check it out before you scrunch 'em in. The front bolts are in need of care for they will loosten. Torque them up with the right bolts and use medium locktite. Check the gasket. Air leaks are a common problem and will turn this mild mannered user friendly 19 into a mysterious pissy beast.

Elwyn, they're M3 X .6 metric. Closest English thread is 5-40. None of the 'murican hardware houses have them. Try MRC for parts.

Thanks! I was thinking of replacing the Phillips head screws with Allen heads.

The four bolts that hold the front case to the cylinder block are 4-40 x 3/8". I know this because I just finished rebuilding my Enya .19-V, model #4005! I bought the M3 metric allen head bolts and they didn't fit. I'm the original owner of the engine, and the threads have never been re-tapped.

Altough 4-40's may fit that is NOT the thread used - it is definitely M3 * .6 pitch WITHOUT DOUBT if you bought standard pitch M3 bolts they would not work as they are .45? pitch.

Sorry for shouting but we've been round this many times before.

1/8 Whitworth fits quite well too but you should run a tap through first.

5-40 is an American thread not English!

I even looked into getting some M3*.6 made - the price was prohibitive!

I use 5-40s instead of the M3 X .6 on my OS 29 Twinstacks.

They fit fine. The 0.6 mm thread works out to 42.3 turns per inch, vs the 40. Close enough.

In fact, the slight interference fit that is created here probably holds the screw better.

I use 5-40 on my Enyas; however, I highly recommend you chase the threads with a 5-40 tap first.

I have 5-40 X 3/8 cap screws, ordered from Small Parts for my Super Tigres, had to order 100 pieces. If you need them I will try to remember to bring some to the meeting on Thursday.

I repeat you can order a screw kit (or a rebuild kit) from the present distributor of Enya. You can even get the gasket. The kit isn't much. Definitly cheaper than buying the tap (or about the same cost). I would order the gasket and keep it on hand, if not needed. The bolts loosten up and the gasket breaks causing air leakage and inconsistent runs. Use locktite and sealer. I believe you'll get eight bolts including the head bolts, these appear to be the same as the crankcase bolts. I would be reluctant to tap the thread because the front end is a load bearing structure. Using the appropriate phillips head will tighten the bold sufficiently and permit a number of removals and replacings.

You do not use a Phillips head screwdriver on a Japanese screw. Simply put they don't fit well at all That deceptivly similar looking item really takes a Japanese Industrial Standard screwdriver to properly match the taper that is in those screws. Most of the WHIA tools will fit perfectly
If you really want a nice set bite your lip go to a heli site and order one from them. Rick's or Heli Proz certainl;y carry them.

And to restate what was in a previous topic, STOP looking for these screws and just order the stuff from Altech. Get a few extra things that you think you might need to justify the postage. Both you and altech will be happy. Dennis
